Why contrast matters

  • Readability for everyone. Low contrast is hard to read in bright sunlight, on cheap screens, and for anyone with low vision.
  • It's a legal requirement in many places. WCAG AA is referenced by accessibility laws worldwide, so meeting it reduces real risk.
  • Don't rely on color alone.Pair sufficient contrast with text labels or icons so information isn't lost for colorblind users.

Frequently asked

What contrast ratio do I need?
WCAG AA requires at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (roughly 18.66px bold or 24px regular). AAA is stricter: 7:1 for normal and 4.5:1 for large text. Aim for AA as a minimum on production sites.
What counts as large text?
Large text is about 24px (18pt) regular or 18.66px (14pt) bold and up. Because larger glyphs are easier to read, they're held to a lower contrast bar than body text.
Is my color data sent anywhere?
No. The contrast ratio is computed from the WCAG luminance formula entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
