Lorem Ipsum traces back to a 1st-century BC text by Cicero, De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. In the 1500s an unknown printer scrambled chunks of it to create a passage that looked like Latin but was just nonsense. The scrambling matters: real prose would draw the eye to its meaning. Lorem Ipsum is deliberately meaningless so the reader looks at the typography and layout instead.

Five hundred years later, it's still the default placeholder for print design, mockups, and demos. Browsers, IDE plugins, and design tools all ship it.

• Use placeholderwhen you're iterating on layout, type scale, or component density and don't want anyone — including yourself — to argue over the wording.
• Use placeholderfor screenshots in pitch decks and demos when you can't legally show real customer data.
• Use real copy as soon as the design is close to final. Real words have weird shapes (long German compounds, French accented characters, English headlines that wrap badly) that placeholder smooths over.
• Use real copyfor any accessibility audit. Screen readers will happily read "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and you'll have learnt nothing about the experience.

Classic Latin is the neutral choice — it doesn't carry cultural associations and most readers tune it out. Hipster Ipsum is funny in design reviews but distracting at scale; if you find yourself reading the placeholder, swap it for the Latin version.

For non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic), use a localised placeholder generator instead. Western placeholder text in a Chinese mockup misleads about line wrapping and vertical rhythm.
