Training by pace
Why runners live by these numbers.
Knowing your goal pace lets you plan a race: multiply it by the distance to get your finish time, and hold it evenly rather than starting too fast. Easy runs sit well slower than race pace; intervals run faster. A pace figure makes all of that concrete.
Common reference paces
- 5:00/km ≈ 8:03/mi ≈ 12 km/h — a solid steady run; a ~35-minute 7K.
- 6:00/km ≈ 9:39/mi ≈ 10 km/h — a comfortable jog for many runners.
- 4:00/km ≈ 6:26/mi ≈ 15 km/h — a strong, competitive pace.
