Training by pace

Why runners live by these numbers.

Knowing your goal pace lets you plan a race: multiply it by the distance to get your finish time, and hold it evenly rather than starting too fast. Easy runs sit well slower than race pace; intervals run faster. A pace figure makes all of that concrete.

Common reference paces

  • 5:00/km ≈ 8:03/mi ≈ 12 km/h — a solid steady run; a ~35-minute 7K.
  • 6:00/km ≈ 9:39/mi ≈ 10 km/h — a comfortable jog for many runners.
  • 4:00/km ≈ 6:26/mi ≈ 15 km/h — a strong, competitive pace.

Frequently asked

What is running pace?
Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance — minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile. A 50-minute 10K is a 5:00/km pace. It's the number most runners train and race by, because it's easy to hold steady.
Pace or speed — what's the difference?
They describe the same thing inversely. Pace is time per distance (5:00/km); speed is distance per time (12 km/h). This tool shows both so you can use whichever your watch or treadmill displays.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
