Rotate vs. flip

They sound similar but do different things.

  • Rotate turns the whole image around its center in 90-degree steps — useful for a photo shot in the wrong orientation.
  • Flip horizontal mirrors left-to-right — handy for selfies, which many phones save mirrored, or to face a subject the other way.
  • Flip vertical mirrors top-to-bottom — less common, but useful for reflections and certain scans.

Permanent vs. viewer-only rotation

Some tools only set an orientation flag, so the image snaps back when opened elsewhere. This tool re-renders the actual pixels, so the rotation and flips are permanent and consistent across every app and device.

Frequently asked

Does rotating reduce quality?
Rotating by 90, 180, or 270 degrees and flipping are pixel-exact — no detail is lost. PNG output stays lossless; JPG and WebP are re-encoded at high quality, which is visually identical to the source.
Why was my photo sideways to begin with?
Phones often store a photo in one orientation plus an EXIF tag telling viewers to rotate it. Some apps ignore the tag. This tool reads the tag, shows the photo upright, and bakes your rotation into the actual pixels so it looks right everywhere.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Rotating and flipping happen in your browser with the canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device.
