When to convert to WebP
- Web images. Switching a hero image from JPG to WebP at the same quality typically cuts 25–35% of its bytes — directly improving Largest Contentful Paint.
- You need transparency + small size. WebP is the only mainstream format that gives you both.
- You're shrinking a screenshot or graphic. Lossless WebP often beats PNG by 20–30% for the same pixel-perfect output.
When to convert away from WebP
- Sharing with people using old software. Sometimes the cleanest path is JPG/PNG even if it's bigger.
- Uploading to a service that rejects WebP. A few photo printers and form widgets only accept JPG.
- Embedding in a document format that doesn't support WebP — older Word, some e-reader formats, niche CMSes.
Tips
- Quality 75–85 is the sweet spot for WebP photographs. Below 60 banding becomes visible.
- For PNG-style sharp edges(logos, UI), use a higher quality (90+) or accept that lossy WebP will add tiny artifacts — pure PNG-to-WebP at the highest quality still beats PNG's size most of the time.

WebP gives you JPG-class compression with PNG-class features. A WebP at quality 80 is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPG, and it supports transparency, animation, and lossless mode. Every modern browser supports it.
Can I open WebP files in Photoshop or Preview?
Photoshop has supported WebP natively since 23.2 (2022). macOS Preview opens WebP from macOS Monterey onward. Older software may still need the WebP plug-in, which is why converting back to JPG or PNG is useful when you need to share with collaborators on legacy systems.
